Logan County’s first residents are honored in a new America 250 mural that is taking shape with the help of talented youths around the county and guest artists, all with the goal of bringing to life the rich Native American history found right here in our backyard.

Earlier this month, about a dozen pre-teens and teenagers joined together for a LoCo Art workshop, with paintbrushes to hand paint fine details, and utilizing cut glass and grouting materials to weave a mosaic components into the large-scale public art piece that has been many months in the making.

A $2,500 Logan County Visitors Bureau grant funds the project. Planning for the mural began back in the fall.

The piece pays homage to the story of Tarhe, the principal chief of the Wyandot, his daughter Princess Myeerah and Isaac Zane, whom she married.

“The story is movie material,” LoCo Art Co-Director Jennifer Davis said during the mural workshop.

Isaac Zane first came to the area as a captive of the Wyandot. At nine years old, he was captured near his family home in Virginia and adopted by Tarhe-the Crane, according to the Logan County History Center.

Known as the “White Eagle,” Isaac grew up immersed in Wyandot culture. While a prisoner exchange forced Isaac to return to Virginia, his heart remained with the Wyandot, the History Center reports.

He eventually returned home to Logan County, marrying Tarhe’s daughter Myeerah.
