In April, Jennifer Gaver joined the Bellefontaine volleyball program, bringing 28 years of coaching experience and a new sense of direction to the Chieftains.

Gaver arrived in Bellefontaine after coaching stops across Ohio, including nearby West Liberty-Salem and national prep teams in Columbus. She said those experiences helped shape her approach and continue to influence her growth as a coach.

“I’m still learning from colleagues and other coaches around the state,” Gaver said. “Every place I’ve been has helped me become a better coach.”

Gaver described her coaching style as passionate and focused on giving players the tools they need to succeed, both on and off the court.

“Passionate not only about the sport, but about the kids and how we play,” Gaver said. “I want the kids to know and trust us. The big thing this summer is giving them a ton of knowledge and setting them up to be successful.”

Bellefontaine has spent the early part of the summer focused on fundamentals and building team chemistry during camp sessions. Gaver emphasized a fast-paced environment centered on communication, consistency and effort as players adjust to her system. She said the summer provides a springboard into the fall season, and continued praise about the girls’ work ethic, citing 6:45 a.m. workouts and optional team events led by team leaders.

“We wanted to start the summer slow and leave the girls wanting more; that way we put ourselves in a good spot heading into the fall,” Gaver said.

In addition to on-court development, Gaver has placed an emphasis on accountability and team culture. She said establishing trust and leadership within the group will be just as important as skill development.

“We are getting the kids looking at all of the coaches and getting to spend time with and start building those relationships,” Gaver said. “I think those really are the key.”

She said the Bellefontaine community played a major role in her decision to take the job.

“Going through the interview process, everyone from the staff to the kids and the parents has been wonderful,” Gaver said. “I love the city, and I love the way it has grown.”

Gaver takes over a program that reached a district final last season and enters the fall with high expectations. While the team must replace four graduating seniors, she expects returning upperclassmen to play a key role in maintaining the program’s success.

“All four of our seniors are capable of great things here at Bellefontaine,” Gaver said.
