Following a couple of last-minute delays, the Bellefontaine Fire Department finally picked up its new engine Tuesday morning, May 19.
Chief Brian Wilson and the firefighters immediately started to stock the new truck with their own gear, expecting the engine to be ready answer calls before the end of the day.
The new Sutphen engine – built in Urbana, modified in Columbus – could not have been delivered at a better time, as the vehicle it is replacing is long past its lifespan and mechanically unsound. It is to be stripped of any useful items before being relegated to storage.
The BFD has another engine on order, but delivery of that truck is about two years out.

Shortly after taking delivery of their new engine Tuesday, firefighters from the Bellefontaine Fire Department make ready to get the new truck in service. (TOM STEPHENS | THE CHRONICLE)
