Logan County Commissioners Mike Yoder, pictured at the far left, and Joe Antram, second from the left joined the Logan County Master Gardener Volunteers in planting a swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) on the south lawn of the Logan County Courthouse Monday, July 27. The tree was planted to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Logan County Master Gardeners who participated in the tree planting include Jody Brown, Cheryl Elkins, Karen Feltham, Sally Moldas, Tonya Ray, and Kari Thompson.

Logan County Ohio State University Extension Officer Jacob King said that it was his hope that the white swamp oak would be around 250 years from now to help celebrate the 500th anniversary of the United States.

The Logan County Master Gardener Volunteer Program is run through the OSU Extension Logan County Office in Bellefontaine, offering plant science education, community projects and free public workshops. The Master Gardeners will take responsibility for the care of the tree as it establishes its roots and reaches for the sky.
