For Kaci King, there was a time when every day felt like a fight for her children's lives.

Her daughter, Madi, and son, Austin, were born with craniosynostosis, a condition in which the bones of the skull fuse too early, preventing normal growth of the brain and putting dangerous pressure on the body.

"We almost lost Austin," King said quietly. "When we found Dr. Ben Carson, it was truly divine intervention."

After visiting multiple medical facilities and enduring years of uncertainty, the family finally found answers through Dr. Carson, the renowned pediatric neurosurgeon who successfully treated both children. Together, Madi and Austin underwent 27 surgerie

"He was literally the one who saved both of them," King said. "We're incredibly grateful. The kids are doing extremely well now, and thankfully that part of our journey is behind us."

But while the surgeries eventually ended, the emotional weight of a family living through chronic medical crises never completely disappears.

"You want to talk about the impact it has on a whole family," King said. "The worry that your child's going to die — it impacts everyone. No one escapes it. It's not just mom. It's not just dad. It's the siblings, too."

That reality is what made the July 14's Wardrobe Wranglin' event at the Logan County Fairgrounds so meaningful. What began as a creative costume contest and fundraiser organized by Madi Lenhart grew into something much bigger — a celebration of resilience, family and community.
