Mechanicsburg (2-10) picked up its second win on the season over OHC rival West Liberty Salem (4-11), 17-7 Monday night, April 20.
Mechanicsburg’s potent offense aggressiveness on the base paths paved the way early for Mechanicsburg. Avery McDowell’s home run and 4 RBIs propelled the Lady Indians over the Tigers in West Liberty.
In what was an offensive breakout for Mechanicsburg, the team saw three separate hitters contribute 3 hits to the 17-hit performance.
The Indian girls hopped out to a quick 20 nothing lead after the first inning and added on in the second inning to add one more to make the score 3-0 heading into the third inning.
Then a nine-run avalanche happened, sponsored by the Mechanicsburg bats. Before a comeback could start, the Lady Tigers were behind 12-0.
The offense was on fire and was highlighted by the bat of McDowell, who fell only a double short of hitting for the cycle on the night. The girls, as a team, collect an impressive 5 doubles, a triple, and a home run.
The Indians also stole 5 bases on the night.
West Liberty attempted a late-inning comeback that ultimately fell short after falling behind more than 10 runs, to shorten the game due to OHSAA run rules. They fought back hard but fell short of continuing the game by one run.
Aubrie Retterer toed the mound for all five innings of the contest for Mechanicsburg in the matchup. She pitched 5 innings of a seven-run ball, striking out 5.
West Liberty returns to action Tuesday against this same Mechanicsburg squad.
