West Liberty-Salem Tigers (11-7) downed Ohio Heritage Conference foe Lehman Catholic Cavaliers (4-12) 7-3 on Saturday at Dayton Dragons Professional Baseball in Day Air Ballpark.
Lehman Catholic started the game off on the right foot, scoring 2 in the top of the first inning and kicking off the scoring for the game. An RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Ian Stiver and a lined single from Jack Williams saw the score sit at 2-0 early.
A West Liberty response in the second inning saw the deficit close to 1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers took hold of the lead after a walk of Timmy Howells came back to haunt, and Isaac Sertell singled to left field, each scoring one run.
West Lib added insurance in the bottom of the fifth inning collecting five hits. Jeremiah Johnson homered to center field, scoring two runs, and Dallas Koons singled, scoring two more runs.
Johnson drove the offense for the Tigers during the contest. The cleanup hitter went 2-for-2 on the day. He also reached with two walks in the game, proving to be an offensive kickstarter.
Howells toed the mound for the win for the Tigers. As a pitcher, he surrendered six hits and three runs over six innings, striking out eight and walking four.
Stiver took the loss for the Cavaliers. The Cav pitched 4.1innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, striking out five and walking five.
The West Lib offense racked up 10 hits in the game. Brandel Sullivan went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Tigers in hits. Sertell knocked two hits for West Liberty in three at-bats. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, piling up seven walks for the game. West Liberty were sound defensively and didn't commit a single error. Braden Hershberger made the most plays with 12.
Stiver, William Garman, and Williams each drove in one run for Lehman Catholic Varsity Cavaliers. Jackson Garman led Lehman Catholic Varsity Cavaliers with two hits in four at-bats. Lehman Catholic Varsity Cavaliers ran wild on the base paths, piling up four stolen bases for the game.
Next up for the West Liberty-Salem Tigers is a game against Cedarville on Monday.
