TROY, Ohio — West Liberty-Salem’s boys track and field team continued its dominance Friday, capturing its fifth consecutive district championship at the OHSAA Division IV District meet in Troy.
West Liberty-Salem totaled 138 points to hold off runner-up Versailles (118), with Anna (80) and Miami East (78) rounding out the top four in the 13-team field.
The Tigers leaned on a balanced effort across relays, sprints and distance events to secure the title, while also qualifying multiple athletes for the Division IV regional meet in Chillicothe. The top four finishers in each event advanced.
West Liberty-Salem’s lone district title came in the 4x200-meter relay, where the quartet of Jackson Henry, Brevin Louden, Jake Lauck and Taryn Bradley posted a winning time of 1 minute, 32.36 seconds.
Sam Kidd delivered a strong individual performance coming off a OHC record-breaking performance. He followed up last week’s performance by winning the 200-meter dash in 22.49 seconds while finishing second in the 100 (11.03). Bradley also played a key role in the team’s success, finishing second in the 300 hurdles (41.11) and third in the 110 hurdles (15.22), in addition to contributing to multiple relay teams.
The Tigers compiled a string of runner-up finishes that proved pivotal in the team standings. The 4x800 relay team of Zeke Longshore, Asher Cole, Owen Hardwick and Dylan King finished second in 8:06.19, while the 4x100 relay (Henry, Kidd, Tanner Myers and Kamden Yang) took second in 44.56. The 4x400 relay team (Louden, Longshore, Lauck and Bradley) added another second-place finish in 3:33.19.
Individually, Asher Cole placed second in the 1,600 (4:24.74) and added a fourth-place finish in the 800 (2:00.22). Caleb Larson contributed with a second-place finish in the 800 (2:00.04) and third in the 3,200 (9:37.56). Casey Boyer earned a runner-up finish in the high jump (5 feet, 9 inches).
Additional scoring performances helped secure the title. Brayan Gullett took fourth in the 1,600 (4:32.08) and sixth in the 3,200 (9:55.59), while Carson Poppe placed fourth in the shot put (43-5.25). Taryn Bradley also anchored several scoring efforts across events.
All athletes in the top four in finishing spots on the podium advance to the regional tournament next week in the Chillicothe D4 Regional tournament.
The Tigers added depth points with several fifth- through eighth-place finishes, including Jake Lauck (fifth, 400), Jackson Henry (fifth, 200), Lucas Merriman (fifth, pole vault), and Kamden Yang (eighth, long jump).
With the victory, West Liberty-Salem continues a remarkable run of district success and sends a deep roster of qualifiers to the regional meet, scheduled for next Wednesday and Friday in Chillicothe.
