Competitors stand as they waited for the start of the “5K by the Lake” in Indian Lake Satuday July 4. | PRESTON SHIELDS CHRONICLE STAFF

For many people, the Fourth of July weekend is filled with backyard cookouts, bonfires, and late nights watching fireworks. At Indian Lake, however, one tradition begins long before the festivities — with hundreds of runners gathering at sunrise for the annual 5K on the Lake.

Saturday morning marked the 19th running of the popular community event, and this year's race was one for the record books. Nearly 200 participants registered for the race, making it the largest field in the event's history. From seasoned competitors chasing personal bests to recreational runners enjoying the holiday tradition, the course was filled with athletes of all ages and abilities.

Participants also caught a welcome break from the intense summer heat that has settled over the region in recent days. Race-time temperatures hovered around a comfortable 76 degrees, providing a pleasant contrast to the 90-degree-plus conditions experienced throughout much of the previous week.

The competition at the front of the pack was fierce. Calvin Shannon, 27, claimed the men's overall title with an impressive time of 16:33.8. Shannon crossed the finish line nearly a minute ahead of the next closest competitor, solidifying his victory in dominant fashion.

On the women's side, Lindsey Maus turned in the fastest female performance of the morning, finishing in 21:27.8 to lead all female runners.

While participants competed for personal achievements and bragging rights, the race also serves a larger purpose. Proceeds from the event benefit the Indian Lake cross-country program, helping support local student-athletes and the continued growth of the sport in the community.

Race organizers also offered an additional incentive for elite runners. A $100 bounty was available to anyone who broke the event's course records. The men's course record of 14:39 was established by Bobby Moldovan in 2016, while Brittany Moldovan set the women's record of 18:22 in 2017. Although both marks remained intact this year, the competitive spirit and record-setting participation made the 19th annual 5K on the Lake another successful chapter in one of Indian Lake's favorite holiday tradition.
