Do you want the good news first or the bad news? The Benjamin Logan Local School District (BL) Board of Education dealt with both at their regular meeting Monday, June 29.

During his superintendent’s report, John Scheu updated the board on the repairs needed following the April 14 windstorm. With costs exceeding $1 million, he reported that insurance would cover all damage after the district’s deductible.

“There’s a lot we didn’t know about until it was reviewed,” Scheu stated, “but it’s all covered.”

That good news was offset by a notice Scheu had received from Jack Reser, Logan County auditor, related to House Bill 186, which restructures the state’s property tax system and caps revenue growth for districts on the 20-mill floor, like BL. As a result, the district will receive a $1 million reduction.

What they’ll do to offset this loss, Scheu said, will be “a tough decision the district has to make.”

A special moment at the meeting took place right before they adjourned. Mark Himmeger, board president, presented Scheu with a plaque to thank him for his six years of service at BL. Scheu will retire at the end of July.
