TROY — The Bellefontaine girls cross country team delivered its strongest collective performance of the season Saturday at the OHSAA Division III Regional Championships, finishing fifth overall and narrowly missing a team berth to the state meet.
The Chieftains finished with 230 points, just behind fourth-place Wyoming.
Despite falling one spot short of qualifying as a team, Bellefontaine had plenty to celebrate as senior standout Grace Brown secured an individual state qualifying spot, earning her fourth consecutive trip to the OHSAA Division III State Cross Country Championships.
Brown continued her impressive postseason run by finishing ninth overall with a time of 19:33. The senior has been a consistent leader for the Chieftains throughout her career, and her latest accomplishment gives her another opportunity to compete among Ohio's best at the state level.
Sophomore Chloe O'Chocke also turned in a standout performance, recording a personal-best time of 21:46 to finish 49th. Her breakout race highlighted a strong team effort and provided another encouraging sign for the future of the program.
Camila Cely-Hernandez crossed the finish line 65th in 22:23, followed closely by Sloan Stolly, who placed 67th in 22:25.5. Cameo Greene finished just behind Stolly in 68th with a time of 22:25.6.
Senior Hannah Wilson placed 79th in 22:43, while Leila Hammond rounded out Bellefontaine's lineup with a 93rd-place finish in 23:08.
Oakwood captured the regional championship with 41 points, followed by Madeira (82), Versailles (111) and Wyoming (197). Bellefontaine's 230 points placed the Chieftains fifth, just two points ahead of Greenon (232). Urbana finished seventh with 237 points, while Benjamin Logan placed 17th with 415.
Although the team fell just short of its ultimate goal, head coach Stacey Wilson praised the determination and effort displayed by her runners throughout the race.
"It's hard to put into words how proud I am of this team. We came up one place short of something we have worked really hard for, and that's tough. But they left everything on that course today," Wilson said. "Every girl gave what she had, and I couldn't have asked for anything more."

Wilson also recognized the contributions of seniors Brown and Wilson, emphasizing the impact both have made on the program.
"I hope they walk away from today knowing just how much they've accomplished and how much they have to be proud of. Seniors, Hannah and Grace have meant a lot to this program, and I'm thankful for everything they've brought to this team," Wilson said.
While the Chieftains' team season came to a close just shy of the state cutoff, Brown will have one more opportunity to represent Bellefontaine on Ohio's biggest cross country stage.
Brown will compete at the OHSAA Division III State Cross Country Championships on Friday, Nov. 7, at Fortress Obetz, where she will look to cap her high school career with another memorable state meet performance.
