The wait is nearly over for Bellefontaine football fans.

The 2026 football season officially gets underway for the Bellefontaine Chieftains on Thursday, August 6, as the Chieftains welcome the Celina Bulldogs to Bellefontaine for a preseason scrimmage. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

While Thursday night's contest will not count toward either team's regular-season record, the importance of the evening cannot be understated. For Bellefontaine, the scrimmage represents the first opportunity to step onto the field against another program, evaluate the progress made throughout the offseason and begin putting the pieces together for what the Chieftains hope will be a successful 2026 campaign.

After months of offseason workouts, summer preparation and preseason practices, the Chieftains will finally get the chance to compete under the lights.

“We are ready to go out and hit someone else for a change.” Said Head Coach Jason Brown

The scrimmage will provide valuable repetitions for players on both sides of the football. Coaches will be able to evaluate fundamentals, communication, assignments and execution in a live setting, while players will get a chance to experience the speed and physicality that comes with playing against another team.

For younger players and those competing for varsity opportunities, Thursday's scrimmage could be especially important. With a new season comes new opportunities, and the preseason is where players can begin making their case for significant roles once the games start counting.

“We’ve got some young guys outside that are going to need to step up, but I think they are ready for it. We have some guys battling for some spots that will get figured out,” Said when speaking about the youth of the roster.

Bellefontaine enters the 2026 season looking to build on the experience of last year's squad. The Chieftains finished the 2025 season with a 5-5 overall record and a 3-2 conference mark.

Now, with a new season comes a clean slate.

The Chieftains have been preparing for this moment since the conclusion of last season, and Thursday provides the first real measuring stick of where the team stands heading into the regular season.

The atmosphere surrounding Bellefontaine football should be a familiar one for longtime Chieftain fans. Football season brings the community together, and the August 6 scrimmage will give players, coaches, families, students and supporters their first opportunity to see the 2026 Chieftains take the field.

“We love our community; we love the fans. There is nothing like it around here.” Said Brown when talking about the community support the Chiefs receive.

The night will be about more than the scoreboard. It will be about execution, competition and preparation for the weeks to come.

Every snap will provide coaches with information. Every tackle, block, throw, catch and defensive assignment will help establish what this year's team can become.

And with the regular-season opener quickly approaching, there is no better time for the Chieftains to begin finding their identity.

Bellefontaine's regular season is scheduled to begin August 21 at Sidney, making Thursday's matchup with Celina an important first step toward that opener.
