BELLEFONTAINE — The Logan County football spotlight will shine on Bellefontaine Friday night as two familiar rivals meet with plenty to prove.

Benjamin Logan will travel to Bellefontaine for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 11, with both the Raiders and Chieftains entering the rivalry matchup at 1-2 on the season.

For both teams, Friday represents an opportunity to change the direction of their seasons.

Benjamin Logan opened the year with a 42-28 loss to Bluffton before responding with one of the county's more impressive performances of the young season, racing past West Liberty-Salem 41-13. The Raiders then returned home in Week 3 and fell to Lima Senior, 18-10.

Bellefontaine has followed a similar path.

The Chieftains opened the season with a 35-14 road victory over Sidney, but have since dropped consecutive games to Bellbrook and Marion Harding. Bellefontaine fell 49-17 to Bellbrook before suffering a narrow 14-7 defeat to Marion Harding last Friday.

Now, the two teams meet with their records even and their sights set on getting back above .500.

Raiders Bring a Ground Game

Benjamin Logan's offense has shown an ability to put pressure on opposing defenses, particularly on the ground.

Senior running back Jordan Pender has emerged as one of the Raiders' primary offensive weapons. Through the opening portion of the season, Pender leads Benjamin Logan with 269 rushing yards and is averaging 105.7 yards per game. He has also contributed as a receiver and has scored four touchdowns on the season.

Quarterback Adam Tinsman has provided another dimension to the offense, while senior Alex Hassel has become a prominent receiving option. Tinsman has thrown three touchdown passes, while Hassel is averaging 56 receiving yards per game.

The Raiders have also received production from the kicking game. Senior Brandon Heater may have the best leg in the state, adding another weapon for an offense that has shown it can score in bunches.

Chieftains Looking to Regain Their Footing

Bellefontaine enters Friday night looking to put a pair of tough losses behind it.

After opening the season with a convincing win at Sidney, the Chieftains were handed their first loss against Bellbrook before coming up just short against Marion Harding.

The 14-7 loss to the Patriots was a defensive battle, leaving Bellefontaine within one possession late in the contest. That type of close game could provide confidence heading into a rivalry matchup where field position, turnovers and execution could ultimately determine the outcome.

The Chieftains will also have the benefit of playing on their home field, where they will look to turn the rivalry atmosphere into an advantage.

A Rivalry With Plenty at Stake

While September football does not decide a season, Friday night's game carries significance for both programs.

For Benjamin Logan, a victory would even its season record and provide a chance to rebound immediately from the Lima Senior loss.

For Bellefontaine, a win would halt its two-game skid and put the Chieftains back on the winning side of the ledger.

Neither team can afford to look too far ahead.

The Raiders will eventually turn their attention toward Central Buckeye Conference play, while Bellefontaine has its own conference schedule waiting later in the season. But before either team gets there, the focus will be on one another.

It is a matchup that needs little introduction in Logan County.
