BELLEFONTAINE — The Indian Lake Lady Lakers (2-7-1) battled through a physical in-county rivalry Tuesday night but ultimately fell to the Benjamin Logan Lady Raiders (9-2-1), 5-2.
Despite the final score, Indian Lake fought until the final whistle, showing the resilience that has defined the team all season.
With several Indian Lake starters and team leaders forced to leave the field for stretches, younger players stepped into larger roles.
The Lakers responded to the adversity by continuing to compete and maintain their energy throughout the match.
“Even though we didn't pull off the win, our girls didn't stop playing until the clock ran out,” Indian Lake head coach said. “With this being my first year coaching these girls, I have loved seeing how resilient they are, and that resilience showed up last night in our game in many ways.” Lakers Head Coach Caitlyn Brown said.
Indian Lake’s defense was tested throughout the night, but the Lakers received a tremendous effort from their two goalkeepers.
Izzi Mackesy and Bre Wisener combined for 23 saves, with Mackesy recording 18 of those stops.
Mackesy’s performance continues what has been an impressive season for the goalkeeper, who is new to the position — and to soccer altogether.
“I have been thoroughly impressed with her in the goal because she has never played goalie before or even soccer for that matter,” said Brown. “She is dedicated to this team and works hard every day.”
That dedication has helped Mackesy climb to fourth in the Central Buckeye Conference in saves.
Indian Lake found the back of the net twice, with junior Brylee Roseburrough and junior Bre Wisener providing the offense.
Roseburrough opened the scoring for the Lakers with a perfectly placed direct kick from 25 yards out, finding the back of the net to give Indian Lake one of its two goals on the night.
Wisener added the Lakers’ second goal with less than a minute remaining in the match. Positioned perfectly near the top of the 18-yard box, Wisener drilled a shot into the top-right corner of the net to cap the scoring for Indian Lake.
While the Lakers were unable to complete the comeback, the performance provided another opportunity for the team to show its ability to respond to adversity.
Indian Lake will look to carry that energy and determination into next week when the Lakers travel to Bellefontaine on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
