COLUMBUS- Persistent rain and repeated delays created challenging conditions throughout the final day of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III state track and field meet, but local athletes still delivered strong performances on a wet and unpredictable stage.
Bellefontaine’s Callie Shumaker capped her season with a pair of top-10 finishes against a competitive field, placing ninth in both hurdle events. Shumaker posted a time of 45.90 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles final after qualifying with a faster 45.51 in the preliminary round. In the 100-meter hurdles, Shumaker recorded a 15.34 in the finals, following a 15.29 in qualifying.
Despite the slick track and interruptions caused by weather delays, Shumaker remained consistent across both events, competing against some of the state’s top hurdlers
At Benjamin Logan High School, Abby Vance turned in a standout performance in the field events, earning a fourth-place finish in the long jump. Vance reached 17 feet, 6½ inches, securing a podium spot in a field impacted by damp runway conditions and shifting schedules.
The steady rain throughout the meet forced athletes to adjust routines and maintain focus during extended pauses, adding an extra layer of difficulty to an already high-stakes environment.
Even with the adverse weather, both Shumaker and Vance demonstrated resilience and strong execution, highlighting the area’s presence on the state stage to close out the Division III meet
