October is one of three months when Logan County's targeted deer-warning beacons are scheduled to flash, drawing drivers' attention to road segments where a county study found collisions happen most often. The Logan County Engineer's Office identified five hot zones after reviewing deer-related crashes from 2020 through 2024.

The locations are County Road 12 between County Road 26 and State Route 47; County Road 153 between State Route 287 and Township Road 157; County Road 13 between State Route 235 and Township Road 46 North; County Road 18 from County Road 11 to County Road 200; and County Road 5 near Township Road 191.

The county study found that deer remain a roadway concern throughout the year, but three months stand out. November is the peak, accounting for nearly one in every five local deer crashes during the study period. Activity rises significantly in October, while January also remains a high-risk month because of winter visibility and deer movement.

Those are the three months when flashing beacons are used with deer-warning signs. Unlike a standard yellow sign that may gradually fade into the background for frequent drivers, the flashing light is intended to renew attention when the seasonal risk is highest. The Engineer's Office also relocates signs as collision patterns change instead of treating every warning location as permanent. The office reports that crash rates have dropped significantly on several major county roads since the beacon program began in 2020, although its published summary does not provide exact before-and-after totals.
