Mary Rutan Hospital’s Emergency Department and local emergency medical services partners have been recognized by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Telestroke Program for excellence in door-to-needle times, a critical measure of how quickly eligible stroke patients receive lifesaving treatment.

Among 34 hospitals participating in the Telestroke Program, Mary Rutan Hospital ranked second overall for door-to-needle performance.

Door-to-needle time measures the time from a patient’s arrival at the hospital to the administration of intravenous clot-busting medication for an eligible ischemic stroke patient. Because stroke treatment is extremely time-sensitive, reducing this interval can be critical to improving patient outcomes.

“Every minute matters when someone is experiencing a stroke, and this recognition reflects the tremendous teamwork that takes place from the moment a patient enters our emergency care system,” said Grace Rodriguez, MD, Mary Rutan Hospital Emergency Department medical director.

“Our Emergency Department team, local EMS providers and our partners through the Telestroke Program work together to quickly identify stroke and provide the appropriate treatment as soon as possible.

Ranking second among participating hospitals is a reflection of their commitment to providing high-quality emergency care to our community.”

The recognition highlights the coordinated efforts of Mary Rutan Hospital’s Emergency Department and local EMS agencies throughout the communities served. Rapid assessment, communication and transport by EMS personnel are essential components of the stroke response process and help ensure patients receive timely evaluation and treatment upon arrival at the hospital.

Through its participation in The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Telestroke Program, Mary Rutan Hospital has access to specialized stroke expertise to assist with the timely evaluation and treatment of patients experiencing stroke symptoms.

Mary Rutan Health encourages community members to recognize the warning signs of stroke and seek emergency care immediately. Common signs can include sudden facial drooping, arm weakness or numbness, speech difficulty, vision changes, dizziness or loss of balance. Anyone experiencing possible stroke symptoms should call 9-1-1 immediately. ■
