The Russells Point Parks Fall Arts & Crafts Fair took place Saturday, Oct. 10. Joan Hinterschied, who organized the event, was there selling raffle tickets and blankets. The money raised will go toward construction of a shade structure over the parents’ seating area at the Russells Point splash pad. (SHARYN KOPF | THE CHRONICLE)
The covid lockdown had a negative impact on many people. And, at first glance, that’s true for Joan Hinterschied, who lost her long-term job in Columbus as a result. She wasn’t ready to retire, but there she was, in her 60s and out of a job. Little did she know then, but Joan was about to embark on a new adventure … in more than one direction.
At the time, Joan and her husband, John, lived at Indian Lake and commuted back and forth to their jobs in Columbus. Before making that move, they’d lived in Marysville, considering it a good halfway point between work and their vacation home. But, eventually, the call of lake life was too strong.
“We loved being here and always knew when we retired we wanted to live here,” Joan said. But they couldn’t resist and moved to Russells Point ahead of time, in 2014. Then, in 2020, she was over 63, unemployed and close to retirement but not quite there yet. Which, she decided, is a good time to pursue a dream.
“I had wanted to be a Realtor since I was 27, 28 years old but didn’t have the courage to step out on my own until covid forced the issue,” Joan said. “I thought, if I’m ever going to do it now is the time, so I did.”
Joan earned her Realtor license and eventually took a job with Choice Properties. She loves the work and considers herself blessed to be doing something she enjoys. And making more money than she did before doesn’t hurt!
