Between work, family responsibilities, and caring for others, women often put their own health at the bottom of the list. An appointment gets postponed. A reminder gets set aside. Another month passes.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Community Health & Wellness Partners (CHWP) is encouraging women to move their health back to the top of that list. Through its “Pink is Stronger Than You Think” campaign, CHWP is reminding women that taking time for a mammogram is an important step toward caring for themselves and their future.
Early detection matters. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that can find cancer before a lump can be felt, or other symptoms appear. Finding breast cancer early can make it easier to treat, and regular screening can lower the risk of dying from the disease.
Feeling healthy does not mean screening should be skipped. Breast cancer can develop without noticeable symptoms, which is why mammograms are part of routine preventive care. Screening is a way to look for a problem before it makes itself known. Knowing when to schedule a mammogram starts with a conversation with your healthcare provider. Mammograms are recommended every two years for women ages 40 through 74 who are at average risk.
Women at higher risk may need a different schedule or additional testing. Your provider can review your family and health history, help you understand your personal risk, and discuss the benefits and limitations of screening.
Being aware of changes in your breasts is also important. A new lump in the breast or underarm, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, or unusual nipple discharge should be discussed promptly with a healthcare provider. These changes do not always mean cancer, but they deserve attention. Do not wait for your next routine mammogram if something looks or feels different.
For many women, the hardest part is getting started. A busy schedule, questions about insurance, uncertainty about where to go, or worry about the results can make it easy to delay care. Whatever is holding you back, start by telling your healthcare team. Asking questions is a practical first step toward getting the care you need.
CHWP is also adding a little extra encouragement this month. Through the “Pink is Stronger Than You Think” campaign, complete your mammogram during October, and you can be entered to win a special gift basket filled with goodies and gift cards from local businesses. Contact CHWP for campaign details and help getting started.
Making your health a priority begins with one phone call. Confirm the date of your last mammogram. Ask your provider when your next one is due. Put the appointment on your calendar and give it the same importance you give to the people who depend on you.
You can also encourage a friend, sister, mother, or coworker to check whether she is due for screening. Offer a reminder, a listening ear, or help making time for an appointment.
This October, let pink be a reminder to take action. Your health deserves attention, your questions deserve answers, and you deserve support along the way.
