DAYTON- For nearly two quarters Friday night, Riverside (6-1) and Northridge (2-5) were locked in a fight that looked like it could come down to the final possession.

The difference between the two teams was just one point.

Then the Pirates found another gear.

What began as a tightly contested battle turned into a Riverside rout after halftime, as the Pirates' rushing attack took over and carried them to a 40-18 victory over the Northridge Polar Bears.

Riverside led just 19-12 at halftime, but once the second half began, the Pirates steadily pulled away.

Gunner Carpenter started the second-half surge with a 29-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter, pushing the Riverside advantage to 26-12.

From there, the Pirates never looked back.

Carpenter added two more touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, scoring from 5 yards and 36 yards to complete a three-touchdown night and put the game firmly out of reach.

By the time the final whistle sounded, what had once been a one-score game had become a 21-point Riverside victory.

But the Pirates had to earn that breathing room.

Northridge came out swinging after Riverside opened the game with a 1-yard touchdown run from Dylan Trimble with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter.

Tyree Carter answered twice for the Polar Bears in the second quarter, scoring on runs of 6 and 9 yards. His second touchdown pulled Northridge within one point of the Pirates, 13-12 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.

Riverside responded immediately.

Brody Orsborne found Justin Mazariegos for a 36-yard touchdown pass with 5:03 left before halftime, putting the Pirates back in front.

Then Mazariegos delivered another big play.

With just over two minutes left in the half, he broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown run, giving Riverside a 19-12 lead heading into the locker room.

That sequence proved to be a pivotal moment in the game.

Mazariegos finished with 88 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries while also catching one pass for 36 yards and a touchdown.

Trimble provided Riverside with another steady presence on the ground, rushing 14 times for 105 yards and a touchdown.

And once the Pirates established control in the second half, Carpenter finished the job.

The Junior running back carried 17 times for 121 yards and three touchdowns, accounting for all three of Riverside's fourth-quarter scores.

While Riverside's offense supplied the fireworks, the Pirates' defense delivered its own big plays.

Orsborne intercepted two Northridge passes, bringing his season total to six. That mark currently leads the Three Rivers Conference.

The final score may have shown a comfortable Riverside victory, but it did not tell the entire story.

For a half, Northridge had the Pirates within one possession and kept the game hanging in the balance.

Then Riverside turned a close game into its own.

The Pirates' ground game came alive after halftime; Carpenter found the end zone three times, and the defense created turnovers when it needed them.

And just like that, a game that looked destined to go down to the wire became a 40-18 Riverside victory.
