Gunnery Sgt. David Shane Spicer was killed in action July 13, 2009, outside Delhi, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations against enemy forces. He was 33 years old.

A native of Logan County, Gunnery Sgt. Spicer graduated from Benjamin Logan High School in Zanesfield in 1994 and walked straight from graduation into the United States Marine Corps.

He never stopped serving. For 15 years, Spicer built a career as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician — the men and women who find and disarm the bombs others bury in the ground.
