River Walk set for Aug. 15

Hands-on adventure invites participants to explore Great Miami River

Residents of Logan County and surrounding communities are invited to discover the natural wonders of the Great Miami River during a free educational River Walk hosted by Pheasants Forever on Saturday, Aug. 15, beginning at the Indian Lake Spillway.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon and is designed to give participants an up-close look at the river's aquatic life, wildlife habitat and water quality.

Organizers note that the event will focus on the headwaters of the Great Miami River and offer a variety of hands-on learning opportunities for participants of all ages.

Visitors will have the chance to observe native fish species found in the river and learn identification techniques from experts. Organizers will also lead a macroinvertebrate survey, teaching attendees how aquatic insects serve as important indicators of water quality and ecosystem health.

The outing will also highlight conservation practices that benefit both wildlife and water resources.

Participants can learn from a Farm Bill biologist about habitat improvement projects that support pheasants and other wildlife while helping protect and improve local water quality. Organizers encourage attendees to explore the river and streambank at their own pace while learning about the many plants and animals that call the area home.

To assist with exploration, seine nets and dip nets will be provided. The event is free to attend, and organizers encourage participants to wear appropriate clothing and footwear if they plan to enter the river.

The River Walk is a collaborative effort involving Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever and Ohio State Parks and Watercraft. The program aims to connect people with local natural resources while increasing awareness of the importance of healthy waterways and wildlife habitat.
