CASSTOWN — Riverside’s bid for an outright Three Rivers Conference championship came up short Friday night, as the Pirates fell to Miami East, 22-8, in a Week 10 showdown between two of the conference’s top programs.
Riverside entered the regular-season finale having already secured at least a share of the TRC championship, but a victory over the Vikings would have given the Pirates the conference title outright. Instead, Miami East defended its home field, handing Riverside a loss and creating a three-way tie atop the conference standings between Riverside, Miami East and Covington.
The Pirates showed their defensive determination early, preventing Miami East from establishing an immediate advantage. Riverside’s Justin Mazariegos intercepted a Viking pass near the Pirates’ end zone, halting a scoring opportunity and keeping the visitors in the contest.
However, an unfortunate special teams mistake gave Miami East the opening it needed to seize control. An errant snap sailed over the Riverside punter’s head, resulting in a safety and two points for the Vikings. Miami East also gained possession following the play and capitalized on the extra opportunity, driving down the field for a touchdown to take an early 8-0 lead.
Despite the setback, Riverside’s defense continued to give the Pirates opportunities to climb back into the game. The unit came up with a crucial goal-line stand, turning away Miami East on fourth-and-goal to prevent the Vikings from extending their advantage.
The defensive stop provided a potential turning point for Riverside, but the Pirates struggled to generate enough offense to capitalize. Miami East eventually found the end zone again, extending its lead to 15-0 heading into halftime.

Both teams continued to lean on their defenses after the break, producing a scoreless third quarter. Riverside remained within striking distance, but the Pirates needed to find an offensive spark to make a fourth-quarter comeback possible.
That breakthrough finally arrived in the final period when fullback Gunner Carpenter powered into the end zone, bringing Riverside within a touchdown. The Pirates added the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 15-8, giving the visitors renewed hope of completing the comeback.
With momentum potentially shifting toward Riverside, Miami East responded with a decisive scoring drive of its own. The Vikings moved the ball down the field before KJ Gusten finished the possession with a touchdown, restoring a two-score advantage at 22-8.
The late score proved to be the difference, as Miami East held on to secure the victory and close its regular season with a conference-defining win.
For Riverside, the loss ended its pursuit of an outright TRC championship but did not erase the accomplishments of a successful regular season. The Pirates finished conference play as co-champions alongside Miami East and Covington, capping a campaign that established them among the league’s leading teams.
Although the Pirates came up short in their final regular-season test, their defensive effort kept the contest competitive deep into the second half. Riverside’s challenge now shifts toward the postseason, where the Pirates will look to build on their regular-season success and continue their season beyond conference play.
