DEGRAFF, Ohio — The Riverside Pirates found themselves in an early hole Friday night, but by the final whistle, they had turned a 10-point deficit into a statement victory.

Riverside defeated conference foe Covington, 27-17, in a Three Rivers Conference showdown, improving to 4-1 on the season and moving into first place in the conference standings.

The Buccaneers, now 2-3, wasted little time making their presence felt.

On the first play from scrimmage, Covington running back Jordan Miller broke loose for a 58-yard touchdown run, immediately putting the Pirates in a 7-0 hole.

Covington added a 36-yard field goal later in the opening quarter to stretch its advantage to 10-0 heading into the second.

That was when things began to click for Riverside.

Behind a stout defensive performance and two interceptions from Brody Orsborne, the Pirates clawed their way back into the contest. While the defense provided the spark, Riverside's ground game steadily wore down the Buccaneers.

At the center of it was Gunner Carpenter.

Carpenter put his head down and battled for every yard, consistently falling forward and pushing the pile whenever the Pirates needed to keep the chains moving.

That physical running style began to take its toll in the second quarter.

Riverside scored 14 unanswered points in the quarter, with Carpenter accounting for two of his three touchdowns on the night. The comeback gave the Pirates a 14-10 advantage heading into halftime.

The third quarter brought more of the same.

Riverside continued to lean on its ground game, with Carpenter and Dylan Trimble receiving a steady workload. The Pirates methodically drained the clock, controlling both the pace of the game and the field position.

Trimble found the end zone in the middle of the third quarter, pushing Riverside's lead to 20-10 and extending the Pirates' run to 20 consecutive points after Covington's fast start.

Covington had an opportunity to answer.

A spectacular reception by Filip McMaken, who made the grab over the top of a Riverside defender, put the Buccaneers in prime position inside the Pirates' red zone. Covington moved the ball all the way to the Riverside 5-yard line, but the Pirates' defense once again came up with a crucial stop.

The Buccaneers turned the ball over with just two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

They wouldn't see it again until there were only 3:15 left in the game.

What followed was perhaps the defining drive of the night.

Riverside embarked on an 11-minute, clock-draining possession led by Carpenter and the Pirates' physical rushing attack. Riverside converted three fourth downs during the drive, repeatedly extending the possession and keeping Covington's offense on the sideline.

The drive ended with Carpenter finding the end zone for the third time, putting an exclamation point on a possession that effectively drained the life out of the Buccaneers' comeback hopes.

The Pirates had scored 27 unanswered points since falling behind 10-0.

Covington managed to add a late touchdown with just over a minute remaining, but by then, the outcome had already been decided.

Riverside's comeback victory not only moved the Pirates to 4-1 on the season, but also put them in first place in the Three Rivers Conference as the season reaches its midpoint.

The Pirates will look to carry that momentum into next week when they travel to Bethel High School to take on the Bees.
