The Lady Pirates (6-5) dropped a Three Rivers Conference game to Covington (10-2) on Thursday night. Covington was fueled by a potent offense, and the game ended after the fifth inning of play, 14-3.
The Pirates were down 1-0 before a batter stepped into the box. Soon after, more was to follow, with Covington piling five more on at the top of the second inning.
Being down 6-0 before some fans had sat down, the Lady Pirates responded by sending two across the plate in the bottom of the second inning, making the deficit 6-2 in favor of the Lady Buccaneers.
The offense of the Lady Buccs was relentless. Immediately responding with one more run in the top of the third inning and throwing up a seven-spot in the top of the fourth.
After the middle-inning barrage, the score was all but out of reach for Riverside, which was able to close the gap in the fifth inning by one run and bring the final score to 14-3 after a condensed finish to the game.
Riverside was able to get six hits in the game and only struck out three times at the plate. The aggressiveness did not pay off, but putting balls in play is the name of the game.
Molly Carman and Keira Manahan were the offensive highlights for the Lady Pirates. Carman hit a double, and Manahan had a two-RBI outing in the game.
For Covington, Jayda McClure, and Kylie Palsgrove proved to be a battering ram for the Lady Buccs, each walking away from Thursday with a homerun on their stat line. Seven girls for the away team added to their RBI total for the season.
The Riverside girls will be back in action Friday night, April 10, at Lehman Catholic (3-5) at 5 p.m.
