RIVERSIDE, Ohio — Riverside High School will add three of the most accomplished athletes in school history to its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, October 9, as Shawn Christensen (Class of 2003), Tanner Lane (Class of 2015), and Connor Cotterman (Class of 2016) are formally inducted during a ceremony beginning at 6:15 p.m. on Veterans' Stadium Field.

The trio represents three generations of Pirate athletic excellence, each leaving a lasting mark on Riverside through outstanding performances, school records, championships, and leadership that extended well beyond the playing field.

Shawn Christensen (Class of 2003)

One of the most decorated football players in Riverside history, Christensen excelled as a four-year letter winner and established himself as one of the premier running backs in the area during the early 2000s.

During his senior season, Christensen rushed for 1,404 yards and 18 touchdowns while averaging an impressive 9.9 yards per carry. He finished his career with 3,105 rushing yards, 39 touchdowns, and 240 points scored, setting Riverside's single-season rushing record in the process.

His accomplishments earned widespread recognition, including Northwest Central Conference (NWCC) Player of the Year honors, Logan County Player of the Year, First Team All-NWCC selections, and multiple district honors. He was also named Riverside's Most Valuable Player.

Christensen's success wasn't limited to the football field. A three-year letter winner in basketball, he earned NWCC First Team honors and was named the conference's Player of the Year during his senior season. He concluded his basketball career with 699 points, ranking among Riverside's all-time leading scorers.

A Wendy's National High School Heisman nominee, OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award recipient, and Riverside Top Senior Athlete, Christensen continued his commitment to excellence after graduation by serving more than 22 years in the United States Air Force. His distinguished military career has included a combat deployment to Iraq, leadership assignments around the world, and numerous commendations for service and achievement.

Tanner Lane (Class of 2015)

Few athletes in Riverside history have demonstrated the versatility of Tanner Lane. A five-sport athlete, Lane earned letters in football, basketball, baseball, track and field, and golf, excelling in every season of the school year.

On the football field, Lane developed into one of the area's top offensive weapons. As a senior, he earned Special Mention All-State honors, First Team All-Southwest District recognition, and was named Riverside's Team MVP and Best Offensive Player. He finished his football career with 2,356 rushing yards, averaged 9.4 yards per carry, added 360 receiving yards, and scored 37 touchdowns.

Lane's athleticism also shined in track and field, where he captured NWCC championships in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, district titles in the 100-meter dash and high jump, and a regional championship in the high jump. He qualified for the Ohio High School State Track and Field Championships and earned a seventh-place finish in the high jump.

In baseball, Lane earned All-Ohio, All-District, and All-Area honors while batting .426 during his senior season. He was named Riverside's Team MVP and led the Pirates with the team's highest batting average. On the basketball court, he earned multiple All-Area selections and finished with 327 career points. He also qualified for district competition in golf during both his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Lane's remarkable all-around career culminated with Riverside's Top Senior Athlete Award in 2015. Today, he continues to serve the local community through his work with Sutphen Fire Trucks in Urbana.

Connor Cotterman (Class of 2016)

Cotterman's name is synonymous with Riverside football greatness. A four-year letter winner, he rewrote the school's record book and became one of the most dominant players ever to wear a Pirate uniform.

His senior season stands among the finest in school history. Cotterman earned First Team All-State honors while being recognized as the Southwest District Player of the Year, All-Area Player of the Year, and NWCC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named Riverside's Most Valuable Player and Best Offensive Player.

By the end of his career, Cotterman had amassed 4,375 rushing yards, a mark that still stands as Riverside's all-time record. He scored 51 touchdowns and accumulated 417 total points as a running back and kicker, cementing his place among the school's most productive offensive players.

Cotterman also starred on the baseball diamond, earning four varsity letters. During his senior season, he received Second Team All-State honors, was selected First Team All-NWCC, and earned Riverside's Most Valuable Player Award.

A Celebration of Pirate Excellence

The induction of Christensen, Lane, and Cotterman recognizes three athletes whose accomplishments helped define successful eras in Riverside athletics. From record-setting performances and state-level honors to leadership and community impact, each inductee left a legacy that continues to inspire current and future Pirates.

Riverside High School will officially welcome the three honorees into the Athletic Hall of Fame during ceremonies at 6:15 p.m. Friday, October 9, on Veterans' Stadium Field, celebrating careers that rank among the finest in school history.
