Some nights in high school football, everything goes according to plan. For the West Liberty-Salem Tigers, Friday night was anything but that.
Turnovers plagued the Tigers from the opening possession, and the West Jefferson Roughriders capitalized on the early mistakes to build a commanding lead on their way to a shutout victory.
West Liberty-Salem was given the opening possession, hoping to set the tone for the senior night matchup. Instead, the Tigers fumbled on their first play from scrimmage, giving the Roughriders an immediate scoring opportunity. West Jefferson wasted little time turning the mistake into a touchdown.
The Tigers’ second possession followed a similar script. Another fumble handed the ball back to the Roughriders, who once again took advantage of the turnover to find the end zone.
In the span of just a few minutes, West Jefferson had built a 14-0 lead before the Tigers could establish any offensive rhythm.
West Liberty-Salem’s third possession brought another setback. Quarterback Beckett Sullivan looked to move the ball through the air, but his third-down pass was intercepted near midfield. The Roughriders capitalized once more, adding another rushing touchdown to extend their advantage.
Three possessions, three turnovers, and three touchdowns for West Jefferson. The Tigers found themselves in an early hole they would struggle to escape for the remainder of the night.
Despite the difficult start, West Liberty-Salem found its best scoring opportunity just before halftime. The Tigers put together a promising drive, advancing all the way to the West Jefferson 10-yard line. However, Sullivan’s pass near the goal line fell behind its intended receiver and into the hands of a Roughriders defender, ending the threat and keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard.

What began with an exciting pregame ceremony turned into a frustrating evening for the Orange and Black. West Liberty-Salem struggled to generate offense against a stout West Jefferson defense, finishing with just 79 total yards.
The Tigers were unable to find the end zone, leaving the scoreboard unchanged from the opening kickoff and sending their seniors off on a disappointing note on their culminating night.
West Liberty-Salem will look to regroup next week when it travels to Mechanicsburg for a matchup with the Indians. The rivalry contest offers the Tigers one final opportunity to close out the regular season on a positive note.
West Jefferson, meanwhile, improved to 8-1 and clinched the Ohio Heritage Conference North Division title. The Roughriders secured the championship and the division tiebreaker through their head-to-head results during conference play.
The Roughriders will return home next week to face Fairbanks in their regular-season finale as they look to carry their momentum into the postseason.
