The West Liberty community is once again preparing for the 28th Annual Ice Cream Social to come alongside a local family during a challenging time facing a difficult medical diagnosis.

The meal for Renee Michelle Moffitt Greene and her family is planned for 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 25, behind the United Methodist and United Church of Christ churches at 202 W. Newell St., West Liberty.

“As a committee we always receive information beforehand about individuals and families in need and we pray over these names. God graciously speaks to us every time. He’s good at that, you know,” the organizers said.

The event is sponsored by several West Liberty churches, the West Liberty Lions Club and the West Liberty Business Association.

The ala carte menu consists of chicken and noodles, chicken and sloppy jo sandwiches, hot dogs/coney dogs, potato, pasta, and apple salads, creamy and sweet and sour slaw, cucumbers and onions, assorted pies, brownies, and cookies, water, tea, and lemonade and the fan favorite homemade ice cream.

Entertainment is being provided by several local musicians.

A 2001 West Liberty-Salem High School graduate, Moffitt Greene, 43, has recently walked through a long medical journey, including breast cancer, followed by primary peritoneal cancer and a number of related health complications as well. She and her husband Jeremy have six children: Nathaniel, Ezekiel, Makayla, Isaiah, Delilah and Viktoria (Tori), and two grandsons.

“I have been blessed to share the last eight years with my husband, Jeremy, who has been my rock through every high and low, and we have been married for the last six months,” Renee Michelle said.

In 2019, she had a preventive hysterectomy after learning she carries the BRCA1 gene. Then, in 2020, the West Liberty resident was diagnosed with Stage lll triple-negative breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes.

“We faced surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation and we truly believed that chapter was behind us,” she said. “In 2023, our world changed again when I was diagnosed with stage lll primary peritoneal cancer.”

At that time, cancer was found in her abdominal lining, stomach, pelvis and on her colon. Along with fighting cancer, she endured multiple surgeries and serious complications after her colon was rebuilt, including bowel blockages and sepsis.

“We celebrated being cancer-free again, but in April of 2026 we learned the cancer had indeed returned,” Renee Michelle said.

“Today, I am living with stage 4B primary peritoneal/ovarian cancer. I’ve completed five rounds of chemotherapy, and now we are taking a short break while my doctors determine the next step after new cancerous lymph nodes were found in my groin, pelvis and abdominal wall.

“My doctors have been honest that this is no longer considered curable.”

The Greene family is most appreciative of this outpouring of community support through the ice cream social and other uplifting gestures. They are holding tight to their faith and fully relying on their Heavenly Father.

“Our goal now is to find treatments that give me the best quality of life and as much time as possible with the people that I love,” Renee Michelle said.

“But here’s what I know: God has the final say. He has carried me through every diagnosis, every surgery, every treatment and every difficult day.

“I don’t know exactly what tomorrow holds, but I do know who holds tomorrow. I will continue to fight with faith, surrounded by an incredible family, amazing friends and a community that has shown us more love than we could have ever imagined.

“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being there. Your prayers, your encouragement, and your generosity reminds us that we’re not walking this road alone. We love you, and we’re grateful for each and every one of you.”

Committee members encouraged the community to “come out and help us love on and support this beautiful child and family of God.”
