MECHANICSBURG — West Liberty-Salem closed its regular-season schedule Friday night with a 49-21 loss to Mechanicsburg in an Ohio Heritage Conference matchup, as the Indians used a dominant rushing attack and a big second quarter to pull away from the Tigers.
Mechanicsburg finished with 505 yards of total offense, including 315 rushing yards on 38 carries, consistently finding success on the ground. West Liberty-Salem totaled 273 yards of offense, with 189 passing yards and 84 rushing yards, but struggled to keep pace with the Indians' explosive scoring attack.
The Indians established control early, opening the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run by Matthew Davis. Aaron Leal Valenzuela added the extra point to give Mechanicsburg a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Mechanicsburg continued to build momentum in the second quarter, finding the end zone three more times to extend its advantage. Camryn Runyon connected with Davis on a 74-yard touchdown pass before Aidan O'Neal added an 18-yard scoring run. Runyon and Davis then connected again, this time for a 70-yard touchdown, as the Indians pushed their lead to 28-0.
Despite the growing deficit, West Liberty-Salem found an answer before halftime. Quarterback Beckett Sullivan connected with Bryson Jones for a 22-yard touchdown pass, putting the Tigers on the scoreboard and cutting the deficit to 28-7 heading into the break.
The Tigers carried that momentum into the second half. Sullivan scored on a 10-yard run in the third quarter, with Tucker Searles converting the extra point to bring West Liberty-Salem within 14 points at 28-14.
However, Mechanicsburg responded with another scoring drive of its own, as Davis found the end zone on a 6-yard run to restore the Indians' three-touchdown advantage. Mechanicsburg entered the fourth quarter holding a 35-14 lead.
West Liberty-Salem continued to fight in the final period. Sullivan scored his second rushing touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run, bringing the Tigers' total to 21 points. The touchdown demonstrated the visitors' determination to remain competitive, but the Indians had little trouble answering.

Davis added his third rushing touchdown of the evening on a 3-yard run, and Liam O'Laughlin followed with a 9-yard touchdown run. Those scores helped Mechanicsburg pull away for the 49-21 victory.
Sullivan led the West Liberty-Salem passing attack, completing 16 of 28 attempts for 189 yards and one touchdown without throwing an interception. He also contributed two rushing touchdowns, accounting for three of the Tigers' scores.
The Tigers finished with 12 first downs and converted three of 12 third-down attempts. Their defense did not record a turnover, but Mechanicsburg's ability to generate explosive plays proved difficult to overcome. The Indians averaged 8.3 yards per rushing attempt and 19 yards per completion, repeatedly turning opportunities into points.
Although West Liberty-Salem showed signs of life with consecutive second-half touchdowns, Mechanicsburg's offensive production ultimately proved too much to overcome.
The loss brings the Tigers' regular season to a close as they turn their attention toward the postseason. West Liberty-Salem will look to regroup and carry the positive moments from its offensive performance into tournament play.
