WEST LIBERTY — After a difficult start to the 2026 season, the West Liberty-Salem Tigers finally found their footing in Week 3.
Now, they will look to prove that performance was the beginning of something rather than simply a one-week turnaround.
The Tigers return home Friday night to host the Greenon Knights in an Ohio Heritage Conference matchup, with both teams entering Week 5 looking to make a statement.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at West Liberty-Salem High School.
West Liberty-Salem enters the contest at 1-2, while Greenon comes in at 3-1. The Tigers are coming off a convincing 31-0 shutout of Cedarville, while the Knights most recently dismantled Triad 41-7.
For West Liberty-Salem, Friday represents another opportunity to turn the page on a challenging opening two weeks.
Tigers Searching for Consistency
The Tigers' season did not begin the way they hoped.
West Liberty-Salem opened the year with a 41-10 loss to Jonathan Alder before falling to Benjamin Logan 41-13 the following week.
Those two defeats left the Tigers searching for answers on both sides of the football.
But Week 3 provided a much different picture.
West Liberty-Salem responded with a dominant 31-0 victory over Cedarville, controlling the game from start to finish while producing its first win and first shutout of the season.
The performance was exactly the type of response the Tigers needed.
Now the challenge is maintaining that same level of execution against a Greenon team that has already established itself as a dangerous opponent.
The Tigers will need to find a way to carry the confidence from the Cedarville victory into Friday night while avoiding the mistakes that contributed to their first two losses.
Greenon Brings Momentum
Greenon enters West Liberty with a 3-1 record and plenty of confidence.
The Knights opened their season with a narrow 13-12 victory over Shawnee before suffering their only loss of the season against West Jefferson, falling 62-28.
Since then, Greenon has responded with back-to-back dominant victories.
The Knights defeated Northwestern 43-6 before rolling past Triad 41-7 last Friday.
That recent stretch has demonstrated Greenon's ability to score points in bunches while creating problems for opposing offenses.
The 41-point performance against Triad was particularly impressive, as Greenon established control early and never allowed the Cardinals to find a rhythm.
West Liberty-Salem will have to contend with that offensive firepower while attempting to keep the Knights from turning Friday's matchup into another high-scoring affair.
A Chance to Change the Narrative
For the Tigers, Friday's game is about more than simply adding another win to the record.
It is about establishing an identity.
West Liberty-Salem has already experienced both sides of the spectrum this season. The Tigers have suffered two double-digit defeats, but they have also shown what they can do when everything comes together with the 31-0 victory over Cedarville.
The question now is whether the Tigers can string together those types of performances.
Greenon provides a difficult test, but it also gives West Liberty-Salem an opportunity to show that the program is ready to compete with one of the OHC's better teams.

Can WLS continue its defensive improvement? After allowing 82 points in its first two games, West Liberty-Salem shut out Cedarville in Week 3. Replicating that defensive discipline against Greenon's explosive offense will be critical.
Greenon's offensive firepower: The Knights have scored 43 and 41 points in their last two games. The Tigers will need to limit big plays and force Greenon to earn every yard.
The Tigers' offense: West Liberty-Salem scored just 23 combined points in its first two games before putting 31 on the board against Cedarville. Continuing that offensive progression will be important.
Starting fast: Neither team will want to play from behind. Greenon has demonstrated that it can create separation quickly, while WLS will be looking to avoid the early deficits that plagued the Tigers in their first two games.
The Bottom Line
West Liberty-Salem enters Friday's matchup with something to prove.
The Tigers have already shown that they can respond to adversity. After two difficult losses to open the season, they answered with a shutout victory and gave themselves a foundation to build upon.
Now comes the harder part — doing it again.
