Most of you—I hope!—have heard of Judy Garland. If anything, you’d recognize the young girl in a checked pinafore dress, gazing wistfully into the sky as she sings “Over the Rainbow” in The Wizard of Oz.

Some of you might even remember that early in her career, Garland performed in 10 movies with an equally young actor named Mickey Rooney.

Both went on to many other projects, creating hits and characters film- and music-lovers cherish still today. It’s this legacy Windmill Productions is bringing to the Holland Theatre on Saturday, Aug. 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. with Babes In Hollywood: The Music of Garland and Rooney.

“This show is not about imitation but a celebration of their talents and the music they sing,” Suzanne Dennis, director/choreographer, explained. And the local cast helps bring it all to life.

Taking the stage are Lori Jenkins-Scott, Joshua Kruetzer, Amanda Stephens and Ian Fullerton. All four throw their hearts, souls and talents into a performance that combines humor, theatrics, choreography, a little romance and nonstop music from a bygone era.

The pit musicians are also on the stage. Linda MacGillivray, producer, and David Schneider, music director, take turns on the piano along with Jeremy Karg, bass; Dennis Crites, drums; and special appearances from Carrie Reynolds, clarinet, and Ian Fullerton, trombone.
