If you've ever spotted a flash of bright yellow bouncing through a field or backyard feeder during the summer months, chances are you've seen an American Goldfinch.
Known for its cheerful appearance and rollercoaster-like flight pattern, the American Goldfinch is one of Ohio's most recognizable songbirds. During the breeding season, males display brilliant yellow plumage accented by black wings and a black cap. Females and winter birds wear more subdued olive and brown tones, making them surprisingly difficult to recognize as the same species.
