The most anticipated video game in years is taking an unusual route to its next major reveal.
Rockstar Games has announced that an extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI will premiere exclusively on Netflix before becoming available on other platforms, marking one of the first times a major video game has debuted new promotional content through a streaming service.
The special presentation, titled “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,” is scheduled to premiere Aug. 27. Netflix subscribers will be able to watch the presentation first, while everyone else will have to wait about six hours before it is released on Rockstar Games’ official YouTube channel and website.
The announcement has generated excitement among fans eager for another glimpse of the long-awaited game, but it has also sparked debate online.
Many gamers have questioned why what is essentially a promotional video is being released first on a paid subscription service. Some fans argue that trailers have traditionally been free and widely available, while others believe the brief exclusivity window is a small inconvenience for one of the most anticipated entertainment releases in history.
Despite the criticism, industry analysts say the partnership makes sense for both companies.

Netflix gains an opportunity to attract millions of gaming fans to its platform, while Rockstar benefits from turning the reveal into a major entertainment event rather than simply uploading another trailer online. The move reflects the growing overlap between the gaming and streaming industries, where blockbuster video games are increasingly treated like Hollywood premieres.
Details about what viewers will see remain under wraps, but expectations are high that the presentation will include the first extended look at actual gameplay. Since the game’s announcement, Rockstar has released cinematic trailers showcasing the game’s setting and characters, but fans have yet to see a detailed demonstration of how the game plays.
Set in the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida, Grand Theft Auto VI follows protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos through a modern-day version of Vice City. The game is scheduled for release on Nov. 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise has sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide and is widely regarded as one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time. Industry analysts expect Grand Theft Auto VI to break sales records when it launches later this year.
Whether fans choose to watch on Netflix or wait for the free release later that day, one thing is certain: the game’s next reveal is expected to dominate the gaming world and further build anticipation for what could become one of the biggest entertainment launches of the decade. ■
