A citizen-led effort to eliminate property taxes in Ohio will not appear on the November 2026 ballot after organizers announced they had fallen short of their signature-gathering goals.
However, supporters said the movement is far from over and plan to continue collecting signatures with hopes of placing the issue before voters in 2027, the Statehouse News Bureau reports.
The campaign, led by the Committee to Abolish Ohio Property Taxes, commonly known as “Ax Ohio Tax,” had been working for more than a year to gather enough signatures to place a constitutional amendment on the statewide ballot.
Organizers were facing a July 1 deadline and needed more than 413,000 valid signatures from voters across Ohio. To account for signatures that may be rejected during verification, campaign leaders had hoped to collect roughly 620,000 signatures before submission, according to the Statehouse News Bureau.
