The days of taking your vehicle to a dealership for every software fix are quickly fading. Just like smartphones receive new features and security updates over the internet, today's vehicles are increasingly doing the same.

But while the technology offers significant convenience, cybersecurity experts say it also introduces new risks that automakers must address, The Times of India reports.

Known as over-the-air (OTA) updates, the technology allows manufacturers to wirelessly send software improvements directly to a vehicle using a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Owners can often install updates from their driveway, receiving bug fixes, new features, improved performance, and enhanced safety systems without scheduling a service appointment.

Tesla helped popularize the approach more than a decade ago, and many other manufacturers are now following suit.

The benefits are substantial. Software issues that once required expensive recalls can now often be corrected remotely. Automakers can improve navigation systems, infotainment features, battery management, and even certain driving functions long after a vehicle has been sold.

The technology can also reduce repair costs for manufacturers while saving customers time and inconvenience.

However, analysts warn that turning vehicles into internet-connected computers also expands the opportunities for cybercriminals. Because modern vehicles remain connected to the internet, they could become targets for hackers seeking to steal data, disrupt vehicle systems, or exploit security weaknesses. Researchers also caution that foreign actors could potentially attempt to interfere with connected vehicle networks if vulnerabilities are left unaddressed.

A recent demonstration in Norway highlighted how weaknesses in connected transportation systems could create security concerns if not properly protected, The Times of Indian reports.

The automotive industry faces a unique challenge because vehicles must meet far stricter safety standards than smartphones or laptops. Before a software update can be released, manufacturers must ensure it will not affect critical systems such as steering, braking, or power management.

That additional testing slows development, but is essential for protecting drivers and passengers, WIRED Magazine reports.

Despite the concerns, industry experts believe over-the-air updates are here to stay. As vehicles become increasingly software-driven, manufacturers are expected to continue expanding their remote update capabilities while investing heavily in cybersecurity.

Future updates may not only fix problems but also introduce entirely new features years after a vehicle leaves the showroom.

For consumers, the shift means cars will continue to evolve much like smartphones—improving over time through downloadable software. The challenge for automakers will be ensuring those improvements remain as secure as they are convenient. ■
